Material Declarations within the Supply Chain – update of ZVEI guidance

In view of the rapidly growing need for information on substances in articles due to an equally rapidly growing number of European and non-European legal requirements, sustainable information management within the value chains is more important than ever.

Not only RoHS, REACH and SCIP require the sharing of information in the supply chain and with authorities. An increasing number of restrictions on substances and entire families of substances in Europe and worldwide are forcing companies to ensure in their upstream supply chain that the material composition of materials, components and assemblies does not exceed specified concentration limits and that the products are thus legally compliant in this respect. In addition, there are often industry- and company-specific requirements that go beyond the legal requirements.

The Core Group Material Declaration of the ZVEI Working Group on Material Policy has updated the guideline on material declaration first published in 2014. The aim of the guideline is to improve the communication of product-specific material and substance information within the supply chain and to ensure "product compliance". The ZVEI guideline provides concrete information on aspects and different types of "material declarations within the supply chain" for the exchange of product-specific material and substance information to ensure "product compliance". In particular, the international standard IEC 62474 on material declaration for products from the electrotechnical industry and for the electrotechnical industry is explained and an outlook on the cross-industry standard IEC/ISO 82474-1, which is currently in preparation, is given.

Ultimately, each individual actor in the supply chain and each individual company decides to what extent it can contribute to improving the communication of product-specific material and substance information.

With the updated guide and a concrete practical example in the appendix, which applies the different declaration types to a connector pin with specific ingredients and compares effort and results, the ZVEI wants to offer everyone the greatest possible support in getting started with this very complex topic.

In case we have raised your interest, you are cordially invited to participate in our working groups.
